The curriculum at Gunning Bedford is rigorous, performance-based, and aligned with state standards. Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts activities reinforce particular topics and units that are developed by instructional teams, using the district-mandated curriculum. Differentiated instructional strategies are used by staff to engage all learners. Computational skills, problem-solving strategies, and the reading/writing process are incorporated into all subjects to reinforce academic and life-long learning. Teachers include real-life scenarios to promote active participation and meaningful transfer of learning from the school to the community. They also strive to teach and use basic research skills, primary resources, the Internet, interviews, surveys, and graphic organization of data so that our students develop critical and comparative thinking skills. The Exploratory Arts curriculum provides two additional courses each marking period to supplement the academic program.
We, as a staff, are committed to using Learning Focused Strategies, an instructional model emphasizing the use of research and evidenced based strategies. We are also dedicated to working in Professional Learning Communities to best meet the needs of all of our students through the use of collaborative lesson planning.
